Xiaomi 18 Fold Debuts in China With In-House Silicon and 6,000mAh Battery

Xiaomi has officially launched the Xiaomi 18 Fold in China, marking a strategic pivot toward a wider aspect ratio designed to challenge the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. The device, which first appeared at IFA 2026, hit the Chinese market on September 7 with a focus on superior hardware and internal silicon.
The 18 Fold features a 7.58-inch inner display and a 5.38-inch outer screen, both boasting a peak brightness of 4,000 nits and an aspect ratio of approximately 1.4:1. Under the hood, Xiaomi has moved away from third-party processors, equipping the device with its own in-house Xring O3 chipset and an Arm Mali G2-Ultra NX GPU. The camera array is a Leica-branded triple system consisting of a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP 3.5x periscope telephoto lens, and a 50MP ultrawide lens.
The Shift to Wide Foldables
This launch reflects a broader industry trend where manufacturers are moving toward "squat" or wide designs. By adjusting the aspect ratio, Xiaomi aims to make the cover screen more functional for standard app usage while optimizing the inner display for media consumption. This design shift comes as the market prepares for Apple's anticipated entry into the foldable space, expected in late 2026.
Outspecing the Competition
Xiaomi is positioning the 18 Fold as a direct response to long-standing criticisms of the Galaxy Z Fold series, particularly regarding battery life and versatility. The 18 Fold includes a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery supporting 67W wired and 50W wireless charging, significantly outpacing the 4,800mAh battery found in the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Industry analysts suggest this represents a significant push for independence. By utilizing the Xring O3 chip, Xiaomi reduces its reliance on Qualcomm while attempting to set a new hardware benchmark for the category. Dominic Preston of The Verge noted that the device's superior specifications make it feel like the phone he wished Samsung had produced.
Pricing and Availability
In China, the Xiaomi 18 Fold starts at 10,999 yuan (approximately $1,600). For collectors, Xiaomi is offering a limited pink ceramic edition priced at 15,999 yuan. While the device is currently limited to the Chinese market, its performance and the adoption of in-house silicon will be key indicators of Xiaomi's ability to compete on a global scale against established foldable leaders.
