The danger lies in how Apple handles cloud storage. Because iCloud backups are automatically updated over time, a backup created after the beta installation will overwrite the previous stable version. Since Apple's ecosystem prevents restoring a backup from a newer OS version onto an older one, users who rely on the cloud may find themselves unable to recover their data if they decide to downgrade.
The Archiving Process
To avoid data loss, users must create a local, locked backup using a computer. For macOS users, this is handled via Finder; Windows users should use the Apple Devices app. Once the iPhone is connected and a local backup is performed, users must navigate to the 'Manage Backups' menu and specifically select 'Archive.' This action freezes the backup state, ensuring that the stable version of the user's data is preserved regardless of subsequent beta updates.
The Risks of Beta Software
Apple typically releases public betas in June following the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), allowing the community to test software before the official autumn launch. However, these versions are unfinished by design. Beta software frequently introduces system instability, significant battery drain, and critical app failures that can render a primary device unusable for daily tasks.

For those using their primary iPhone, the risk of an unstable system is high. Because of the version mismatch between beta and stable software, a manually archived local backup is the only guaranteed method to recover data during a downgrade.
