Authorities at Bhondsi jail in Gurgaon have deployed a sophisticated electronic detection system designed to prevent incarcerated gangsters from managing criminal empires. The initiative marks a strategic pivot toward active hardware discovery to eliminate the illicit communication channels used by high-profile inmates.
The facility has integrated Non-Linear Junction Devices (NLJD), which allow security personnel to locate electronic devices regardless of whether they are powered on or off. To complement this, deep earth metal detectors are now utilized to find gadgets concealed within walls or buried beneath the ground. According to Senior Jail Superintendent Naresh Goyal, NLJD is the most effective tool for these scenarios, significantly enhancing the facility's ability to maintain internal security.
The Failure of Jamming
Historically, Bhondsi jail struggled with the smuggling of mobile phones, a problem that peaked around 2019. High-profile figures, such as the gangster Kaushal, were known to maintain contact with outside aides while imprisoned. While the administration initially relied on frequency jammers to block signals, these tools became largely ineffective as telecom providers upgraded networks to 4G and 5G frequencies. This technological evolution rendered passive jamming obsolete, necessitating a move toward physical detection technology that identifies the hardware itself rather than the signal it emits.
Strategic Security Shifts
This transition from passive jamming to active detection represents a broader effort to dismantle the command-and-control structures of gangs. By removing the ability of criminals to communicate with the outside world, the government aims to reduce urban crime and extortion orchestrated from behind bars. To further tighten security, the jail has installed video conferencing facilities. These systems reduce the frequency of transporting prisoners to court, thereby curbing the opportunities for contraband and phones to be smuggled into the facility during transit.
Future Outlook
While the administration reports a significant drop in illicit activity, the effectiveness of these measures will depend on the continued vigilance of staff and the ability of the technology to keep pace with new smuggling methods. According to the Times of India, extortion calls from the prison have plummeted to zero in recent months, though this specific claim has not been independently verified.
