Boox Note Air5 C: Versatile E Ink Tablet Struggles to Replace STEM Binders

The debate between digital organization and analog efficiency continues for STEM students, who must balance complex equations with heavy reading loads. A recent evaluation by Android Police suggests that while e-ink tablets provide a viable alternative to paper, they may function better as complementary tools than total replacements for traditional binders.
Android Police tested the Boox Note Air5 C, a color e-ink tablet utilizing Kaleido 3 technology, to determine its utility in a STEM environment. Unlike closed-system competitors such as the reMarkable or Supernote, the Boox Note Air5 C runs on Android and provides full access to the Google Play Store. This openness allows students to install a wide array of third-party applications, expanding the device's functionality beyond simple note-taking and PDF annotation.
The Digital-Analog Divide
STEM disciplines typically require a high volume of handwritten technical notation and the ability to reference multiple sources simultaneously. E-ink devices aim to bridge this gap by offering a tactile, paper-like writing experience without the blue light emission associated with standard LCD or OLED tablets. This reduction in eye strain is a primary draw for students spending hours reviewing dense technical documentation.
However, the transition to a fully digital workflow introduces its own set of frictions. While the Boox device offers superior app flexibility due to its operating system, the physical act of multitasking—switching between a textbook, a notebook, and a reference folder—remains a challenge for digital interfaces to replicate seamlessly.
The Efficiency Gap
For many students, the cognitive load of navigating digital menus can outweigh the benefits of having all files in one place. Timi Cantisano of Android Police concluded that a traditional setup of a physical notebook, textbook, and folder is more efficient for multitasking than an e-paper notebook. According to Cantisano, the digital approach does not necessarily streamline the high-intensity workflow required for STEM majors.
Because of these limitations, the device is positioned more as a specialized accessory than a primary workstation. Cantisano noted, "I'd say that it's better to use something like the Boox as a complementary piece if you're interested," adding that they do not believe the device is more efficient than a standard analog setup.

As e-ink technology evolves, the focus remains on reducing the latency and interface friction that currently hinder multitasking. For now, the Boox Note Air5 C serves as a powerful tool for those who prioritize app integration and eye comfort, but the traditional binder remains the gold standard for raw efficiency in the classroom. Students are encouraged to weigh the cost and learning curve of these devices against the proven reliability of paper.
