ByteDance and Nubia Debut NaviX Ultra to Break Mobile 'Ecosystem Walls'
The second-generation Doubao AI phone shifts from a user-operated tool to an autonomous agent-centric model.
ZTE Nubia and ByteDance have unveiled the Nubia NaviX Ultra, the second-generation Doubao AI phone, at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026. Positioned as the world's first AI-powered smartphone, the device attempts to move the mobile experience away from manual app navigation toward autonomous task execution.
The NaviX Ultra introduces the Doubao Phone Assistant Intent Model 2.0, a technical upgrade that enhances intent recognition and enables multi-task queuing. This allows the device to handle simultaneous task submissions and invoke multiple tools within a single conversation. To facilitate this, the phone integrates with over 10 platforms, including Qunar, Luckin Coffee, and Douyin, allowing the AI to execute workflows across these services autonomously.
Overcoming the Ecosystem Wall
This launch follows a turbulent debut for the first-generation Doubao phone, the Nubia M153, released in December 2025. The M153 struggled against what analysts call "ecosystem walls," as major platforms including Taobao, Meituan, and WeChat blocked the AI's simulated operations. These conflicts arose because the AI agents bypassed traditional user interfaces and the ad-revenue models they support, leading to a clash between ByteDance's agentic vision and the closed-garden approach of established internet giants.
A Shift in Mobile Computing
The NaviX Ultra represents a critical test of whether AI agents can successfully replace the traditional app-based operating system paradigm. By transitioning to an "agent-centric" model, ByteDance and Nubia are attempting to move the industry from a pattern of "app-switching" to one of "intent-fulfillment," where the phone executes complex workflows in the background without requiring the user to manage individual interfaces.
"Agent smartphones are designed to shift from users operating the phone to the phone handling tasks for users, making life easier and more convenient for users," said Ni Fei, President of Nubia.
The Path Forward
Whether the NaviX Ultra can truly dismantle the barriers erected by dominant app developers remains to be seen. The success of the device depends on whether the industry accepts a model where AI agents control the user experience, or if the "ecosystem walls" of the major platforms will continue to block autonomous AI operations to protect their data and revenue streams. This struggle highlights a fundamental tension in the next era of computing: the battle between the seamlessness of autonomous agents and the proprietary control of the app economy.
