Google brings Motion Assist to all Android 17 devices to fight motion sickness

Google has expanded its Motion Assist feature to all smartphones running Android 17, moving the tool beyond its initial Pixel exclusivity to help users reduce motion sickness. The announcement, made by Google’s Mishaal Rahman on September 14, 2026, marks the general availability of the technology across the broader Android ecosystem.
The feature functions by utilizing the device's internal motion sensors to generate subtle visual bubbles along the edges of the screen. These bubbles move in real-time to mirror the physical forces acting on the passenger, shifting dynamically to match the vehicle's turns, acceleration, and braking. According to Rahman, these cues help the brain synchronize what the eyes see on the screen with what the body feels during transit.
The battle for the passenger seat
Motion Assist is Google's strategic response to Apple's "Vehicle Motion Cues," which debuted in iOS 18 in 2024. While Google began internal testing of its own solution in 2024, the rollout was gradual. The feature first appeared on the Pixel 11 family of devices in late August 2026 before Google decided to open the capability to all manufacturers supporting the Android 17 update.
Solving the sensory conflict
Motion sickness typically occurs due to a sensory mismatch: the inner ear detects the motion of a moving vehicle, while the eyes remain fixed on a static smartphone screen. This conflict signals a discrepancy to the brain, often resulting in nausea or dizziness. By providing a peripheral visual reference of the vehicle's movement, Motion Assist bridges this gap, allowing the brain to reconcile the conflicting inputs and making mobile device usage more comfortable for passengers.
Ecosystem integration
