Fan-Made Super Smash Bros. Melee Port Hits Android in Broken Beta

Developer 999sian leverages recent game decompilation to bring the GameCube classic to mobile and PC.

The legendary GameCube fighter Super Smash Bros. Melee is making its way to modern hardware via an unofficial fan-made port. Developed by GitHub user 999sian, the project aims to bring the competitive title to Windows, Linux, and Android platforms.

The release follows the successful efforts of the 'doldecomp' group, which recently completed a full decompilation of the game's original code. By utilizing this decompiled source, 999sian has integrated the Aurora graphics compatibility layer to facilitate the port. While the Windows and Linux versions are reportedly functional, the Android release—currently in v0.1.0 beta—is confirmed to be broken at this time. To run the software, users must provide their own US-version disk image (v1.02).

The Shift from Emulation

For years, playing Melee on non-Nintendo hardware required emulation, primarily through the Dolphin emulator. While effective, emulation acts as a translation layer that can introduce input lag or performance overhead. The recent work by the doldecomp community changes this dynamic by providing the actual logic of the game in a readable format. This allows developers to create native ports that communicate directly with the host operating system's hardware, bypassing the need for a virtual GameCube environment.

Performance and Accessibility

Native ports are significant for the Melee community because they typically offer superior performance, higher resolutions, and increased stability compared to traditional emulation. For a game defined by frame-perfect inputs and high-level competitive play, reducing the overhead between the player and the game engine is critical. Bringing this experience to Android could drastically expand the game's accessibility, allowing the competitive community to engage with the title on mobile devices without the constraints of heavy emulation software.

The Road to Stability

Despite the ambition of the project, the current state of the Android APK serves as a reminder of the complexity involved in native porting. The v0.1.0 beta is not yet playable, and the developer must resolve these initial bugs before the mobile version becomes a viable alternative to emulation. Observers will be watching for subsequent updates to the GitHub repository to see if the Android build can reach the same functional status as the PC and Linux versions.
