Firefox Wins 60-Day Android Browser Trial as Chrome Performance Slips
A comprehensive test of major mobile browsers reveals that tab management and extension support outweigh ecosystem integration for power users.
A long-term Google Chrome user has abandoned the industry leader in favor of Firefox after a 60-day trial of the top Android browsers. The switch follows a series of performance failures on desktop hardware that prompted a search for a more stable, cross-device workflow.
According to a report from Android Police, the author—a Chrome user of 14 years—decided to pivot after experiencing severe performance bottlenecks on a flagship HP laptop. Despite having fewer than a dozen tabs open, the browser suffered from stuttering and hiccups, rendering the experience unstable. To find a replacement, the author tested Chrome against Microsoft Edge, Samsung Internet, and Firefox across a Google Pixel, a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, and a Galaxy Tab S10 FE.
The Competition
While other browsers offered specific strengths, they failed to meet the requirements for a seamless cross-platform experience. Microsoft Edge was praised for its overall performance and efficient syncing across devices. However, it was ultimately rejected due to aggressive Copilot prompts and poor tab repositioning when used in Samsung DeX mode.
Samsung Internet was noted for being lightweight and providing effective ad-blocking. Despite these advantages, it failed the test due to unstable account logins on Windows and poor optimization for tablets, specifically an inability to pull tabs into separate windows.
Why Firefox Won
Firefox emerged as the winner by providing a "mature" tab management system that performed well on large screens. Unlike its competitors, Firefox offered full desktop-grade extension support and maintained fluid performance across both the Pixel mobile device and the PC. The Android Police author noted that "Firefox does everything Google forgot how to do in a proper Android browser."
This shift highlights a growing tension between ecosystem convenience and functional utility. For power users—particularly those utilizing tablets or desktop-like environments such as DeX—the ability to manage complex workflows via extensions and sophisticated tab handling is now more critical than the deep integration offered by Google Workspace.
The Path Forward
The trial suggests a broader trend of frustration with what the author describes as "AI bloat" and gimmicks taking priority over meaningful functional upgrades in mainstream browsers. As users increasingly rely on multi-device setups involving foldable phones and high-end tablets, the demand for desktop-class functionality on mobile is rising.
While Chrome remains the dominant force due to its integration with Google services, this 60-day experiment demonstrates that stability and power-user features are becoming the primary drivers for browser migration.
