Square Enix Returns to Turn-Based Roots with Final Fantasy Resonance

The upcoming HD-2D RPG blends classic mechanics with a narrative expanded from the Brave Exvius mobile title.

Square Enix is bringing the Final Fantasy franchise back to its turn-based origins with the announcement of Final Fantasy Resonance. Scheduled for release on October 22, 2026, the title serves as a modernized tribute to the series' classic era, blending nostalgic gameplay with contemporary technical polish.

The game marks the first time a mainline Final Fantasy entry will utilize Square Enix's HD-2D art style, a visual approach previously seen in titles like Octopath Traveler. Based on the story of the mobile game Brave Exvius, Resonance has been significantly expanded for a standalone console and PC release. It features a full overworld with traditional RPG elements and a reworked turn-based battle system. According to Engadget, the experience feels like a "love letter to its classic RPGs that goes beyond a simple play for nostalgia."

A Bridge to the Golden Age

For several years, the Final Fantasy series has trended toward action-oriented combat and massive multiplayer online experiences, most notably in Final Fantasy XVI. This shift moved the brand away from the sprite-based, turn-based systems that defined the franchise during the 1990s and early 2000s. Resonance is designed to bridge this gap, offering a return to the "golden age" of the series while utilizing the HD-2D engine to provide a high-fidelity update to the 2D aesthetic.

Mechanics and Legacy

Central to the gameplay is the "Vision system," which allows players to junction legacy characters—such as Cloud, Tidus, or Zidane—to new characters to inherit their specific abilities. This system integrates the series' deep history directly into the combat loop. Additionally, the game incorporates a stagger system and "Ascension attacks," which function as super-powered Limit Bursts triggered when all enemies are staggered. To further lean into the retro experience, the overworld utilizes random battles without visible enemy sprites on the map.

Market Strategy and Availability

This strategic pivot suggests Square Enix is targeting long-time fans who felt alienated by the series' move toward action. By leveraging the Brave Exvius IP and integrating legacy characters, the company is attempting to monetize nostalgia while expanding a mobile property into a full-scale premium experience.

Final Fantasy Resonance will retail for $50 and will be available across a wide array of platforms, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, PC via Steam, the Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Switch 2. As the release date approaches, industry observers will be watching to see if this return to traditional mechanics signals a broader shift in the franchise's design philosophy.
