The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is facing a practical design hurdle as its internal hardware placement makes standard magnetic accessories nearly impossible to use comfortably. The device's short form factor combined with a poorly positioned charging coil means that most magnetic battery banks simply do not fit the chassis.

According to 9to5Google, the Galaxy Z Fold 8's Qi ring is positioned very low on its frame. This placement causes magnetic wallets and battery banks to extend past the bottom edge of the phone, leaving them "well out of place" and hanging below the device. This physical misalignment prevents a flush fit, compromising both the stability of the accessory and the ergonomics of the handset.

The Foldable Accessory Gap

Samsung has a history of camera designs that complicate the use of magnetic accessories across its Galaxy lineup. With the Z Fold 8, these dimensions have created a specific conflict. While the industry is moving toward the Qi2 standard to improve magnetic alignment and efficiency, the physical footprint of the Fold 8 remains a barrier. This is a challenge likely to persist for other wide-format foldable devices entering the market, as they struggle to balance internal component layout with external accessory compatibility.

The iPhone Duo Effect

Interestingly, the solution may come from a competitor. The recent launch of the iPhone Duo—Apple's first foldable smartphone, announced in September 2026—is driving the development of more compact power solutions. BMX has already responded to the iPhone Duo's release by launching a 5,000 mAh solid-state magnetic battery bank designed specifically to avoid hanging over the bottom edge of a foldable frame.

However, this new hardware is not a universal fix. Because of the Galaxy Z Fold 8's specific camera layout, the BMX solid-state battery bank does not fit the Samsung device perfectly. The conflict between the battery's footprint and the camera housing prevents the seamless integration that the iPhone Duo enjoys.

Industry Implications

As foldable phones transition from niche luxury items to mainstream hardware, the lack of properly fitting magnetic power solutions limits the overall convenience of the platform. Users expecting a seamless ecosystem of snap-on accessories are instead finding that hardware dimensions often override standard specifications.

What to Watch

The emergence of the iPhone Duo is inadvertently creating a market for smaller, more compact Qi2 batteries. While current options like the BMX model struggle with Samsung's camera placement, the shift toward solid-state battery technology allows for smaller footprints. The long-term fix for Android foldables will likely require a combination of these smaller battery technologies and optimized camera placements in future Samsung iterations to finally resolve the fitment gap.
