Google limits advanced Gemini AI features to Pixel 11 and 2026 flagships

Google is restricting its most advanced 'Gemini Intelligence' AI features to the upcoming Pixel 11 and 2026 flagship devices, leaving the Galaxy S25 and Pixel 10 behind. This move signals a shift where software versioning, rather than raw hardware power, determines a device's capabilities.

According to Android Police, the new suite of Gemini Intelligence features includes 'Rambler' for natural dictation, 'Create My Widget' for AI-generated widgets, enhanced autofill, and advanced task automation. To run these tools, Google has set a minimum requirement of Android 17, 12GB of RAM, and the Gemini Nano v3 model or newer. While the Galaxy S25 meets the OS and RAM thresholds, it is disqualified because it is limited to Gemini Nano v2. Similarly, the Pixel 9 is capped at v2, and the S24 remains on v1.

The New Gatekeeper

As smartphone processors and GPUs reach a performance plateau, manufacturers are increasingly using AI software as the primary differentiator for new releases. Google's Gemini Nano—the on-device model powering these experiences—has effectively become a gatekeeper. In this ecosystem, the version of the AI model installed on the device dictates functionality regardless of the underlying chipset or NPU capabilities.

For Pixel 11 users, this exclusivity extends to a specific set of high-end tools. These include Proactive Assistance (previously known as Magic Cue), improved Live Translate dubbing, Magic Capture, Camera Looks, and the Creator Suite. These features will be available on 2026 flagships like the Galaxy S26, but remain locked for the S25 despite its hardware being technically capable of supporting them.

Software-Defined Obsolescence

This strategy highlights a growing trend toward 'software-defined' obsolescence. When high-end hardware is sidelined by arbitrary software versioning, users may find their devices functionally inferior to newer models despite having sufficient power. This creates a scenario where the upgrade cycle is driven not by the need for a faster processor, but by the desire for a newer version of an AI model.

What to Watch

Industry observers are now monitoring whether this versioning remains strictly tied to launch dates or if Google will eventually provide updates to older Nano versions. For now, the Galaxy S25 and Pixel 10 stand as examples of capable hardware limited by software boundaries, leaving users to wait for the 2026 cycle to access the full Gemini Intelligence suite.
