Google Photos adds Android grid controls to reduce media clutter
New updates allow users to hide third-party app content and control highlight images in the main gallery.
Google is introducing new personalization options for the Google Photos grid on Android to give users more control over how their media is displayed. These updates target long-standing complaints regarding visual clutter and the lack of layout customization.
According to an APK teardown of Google Photos version 7.92.0, a "Feature photos" toggle is coming to the Android app. This setting will allow users to enable or disable the randomly enlarged highlight images that currently appear in the grid. Additionally, version 7.14 has introduced "Show content from other apps" settings. This tool allows users to block specific third-party applications entirely or hide specific types of clutter, such as GIFs, memes, and screenshots, from the main gallery view.
The battle against digital noise
Google Photos has traditionally provided basic layout density options, allowing users to view photos by day, week, or month. It also utilizes a "Feature mode" that automatically enlarges certain images to highlight specific moments. However, the inability to opt out of these highlights and the automatic inclusion of every image saved from messaging apps have created a fragmented user experience. For many, the primary gallery has become a dumping ground for temporary media rather than a curated archive of meaningful memories.
Shifting toward a curated archive
These updates represent a shift in Google's approach, moving the app from a passive media gallery toward a more curated archival tool. By allowing users to filter out "digital noise" from social media and messaging apps, Google is improving the utility of the platform for long-term storage. Controlling the visual rhythm of the grid via the Feature photos toggle further allows users to decide whether they prefer a uniform layout or an AI-driven highlight reel.
What to watch
While the decluttering tools in version 7.14 are already rolling out, the "Feature photos" toggle remains a discovery from an APK teardown and has not yet been officially released to all users. It remains to be seen if Google will expand these filtering capabilities to include AI-powered categorization of clutter or if further layout density options will be added to the Android experience.
