Google Pixel 11 Debuts Tensor G6 Chip with TSMC 3nm Process and MediaTek Modem

Google has launched the Pixel 11 series powered by the Tensor G6 chip, marking a critical attempt to resolve long-standing hardware instabilities. The new silicon focuses on real-world efficiency and connectivity rather than raw benchmark dominance.

The Tensor G6 is manufactured by TSMC using the N3P refined 3nm process, debunking previous industry rumors that the chip would utilize a 2nm node. According to Google, this architectural shift delivers tangible speed gains, with the company claiming the G6 is 25% faster at web browsing and 15% faster at app launches compared to the previous Tensor G5.

In a significant hardware pivot, Google has replaced the Samsung Exynos modems used in previous generations with the MediaTek M90 modem. This change specifically targets the 5G efficiency and connectivity issues that have historically plagued the Pixel lineup. However, the hardware shift comes alongside some trade-offs in capacity; the Pixel 11 Pro XL features a 5,115 mAh battery, which is slightly smaller than the 5,200 mAh cell found in the Pixel 10 Pro XL.

The Battle Against Thermal Throttling

For several generations, Google's custom silicon has lagged behind Qualcomm and MediaTek in peak performance and power efficiency. Pixel users have frequently reported thermal throttling and significant battery drain during 5G usage, which often undermined the devices' AI capabilities. While the Tensor G5 began the transition to TSMC manufacturing, the G6 represents a deeper effort to stabilize the user experience by addressing the modem-related power draws that previously caused devices to run hot.

Why Reliability Trumps Benchmarks

The success of the Pixel 11 depends on whether Google can move past "benchmark chasing" to solve fundamental reliability issues. If the combination of the MediaTek modem and the N3P process results in stable connectivity and sustained performance without overheating, it validates Google's strategy of prioritizing AI and usability over raw power. As Rajesh Pandey of Android Police noted, the argument for prioritizing usability falls apart the moment a device begins to overheat under pressure.

What to Watch

Industry analysts are now waiting to see if these hardware changes translate to actual longevity in the field. While the refined 3nm process is a step forward, the slightly smaller battery in the Pro XL means the Tensor G6 must be significantly more efficient to maintain or improve total runtime. The primary metric for success will be whether the MediaTek M90 modem finally eliminates the erratic battery drain associated with 5G connectivity.
