Google Pixel 11 Pro returns to notification LEDs with rear-mounted 'HiLight'
The new hardware indicator aims to reduce screen distractions but faces criticism for its face-down requirement.
Google has reintroduced a hardware notification light to its flagship lineup with the debut of the Pixel 11 Pro. The new feature, branded as "HiLight," marks a return to a physical indicator for alerts, though its unconventional placement has already sparked debate among early users and critics.
Embedded directly into the camera bar on the back of the device, the HiLight LED is designed to provide glanceable information without requiring the user to pick up the phone. The light is specifically intended for use when the device is placed face down. Its current functionality is limited to a small set of triggers, including incoming calls, messages, notifications from favorite contacts, and interactions with Google's Gemini AI. The Pixel 11 Pro, which also features the new Google Tensor G6 SoC, attempts to solve the problem of notification fatigue by moving the alert away from the primary screen.
A return to hardware alerts
Notification LEDs were once a standard feature of early Android smartphones, allowing users to identify the type of alert they received via different colors. Over the last decade, these were largely phased out in favor of Always-On Displays (AOD) and software-based edge lighting. Google's HiLight is a spiritual return to this hardware-based approach, drawing comparisons to the Glyph interface found on Nothing phones, though Google has opted for a more discreet, rear-facing implementation.
The ergonomics of distraction
Despite the nostalgia for the notification LED, the HiLight's execution highlights a fundamental tension between Google's design philosophy and actual user behavior. By placing the LED on the back, Google is encouraging a "distraction-free" environment where the screen remains hidden. However, this requires users to fundamentally change their habits, as most people keep their phones face-up to access the clock or AOD notifications.
Critics argue that the implementation is flawed because it ignores the ergonomics of how smartphones are typically used, offering less flexibility than the software-driven solutions that replaced LEDs years ago. By narrowing the scope of the feature to a specific physical orientation, Google risks making the hardware a niche tool rather than a universal utility.
What to watch
As the Pixel 11 Pro rolls out, it remains to be seen if Google will expand the types of notifications the HiLight can signal or if the feature will remain a specialty tool for a small subset of users. Whether this serves as a blueprint for future "mindful" hardware or a cautionary tale in ergonomics depends on whether users are actually willing to flip their phones over to stay informed.
