Google Pixel 11 raises entry price as hardware gains remain marginal

The new flagship starts at $899, a $100 jump driven by the removal of the 128GB storage tier.

Google has launched the Pixel 11 with a higher starting price and a shift in storage options, signaling a new pricing strategy for its flagship line. The move raises the barrier to entry for new users while offering iterative hardware updates over the previous generation.

The Pixel 11 now starts at $899, which includes 256GB of base storage. This represents a $100 increase over the Pixel 10's original starting price of $799, which offered 128GB of storage. The price hike is primarily a result of Google eliminating the lowest storage tier entirely, effectively forcing a higher entry point for the base model.

Iterative Hardware Updates

Under the hood, the Pixel 11 upgrades to the Tensor G6 processor, succeeding the Tensor G5 found in the Pixel 10. Despite the chip refresh, the physical chassis remains largely unchanged. Both devices feature a 6.3-inch OLED screen with a 60-120Hz variable refresh rate. The only notable physical difference is a slight reduction in weight; the Pixel 11 weighs 6.9 ounces, making it marginally lighter than the 7.2-ounce Pixel 10.

On the imaging front, Google is leaning further into artificial intelligence. The Pixel 11 introduces "Magic Capture," an AI-driven feature designed to extract high-quality still images from video footage. Additionally, the base model now supports an expanded 30x digital zoom, providing more reach than the previous iteration.

The Value Gap

This pricing shift highlights a growing tension between stagnant hardware and the push for AI-driven software value. For many consumers, the $100 premium may be difficult to justify given that the primary physical improvements are a slightly lighter frame and a newer processor.

The value proposition is further complicated by the current market for the predecessor. As the Pixel 11 enters the market, the Pixel 10 is seeing significant discounts, with some retailers offering the older model for as low as $600 via Verizon. This creates a substantial price gap between the two generations, making the older hardware an attractive alternative for budget-conscious buyers.

What to Watch

As Google continues to prioritize the Tensor chip series for AI integration, the industry will be watching to see if this higher entry price becomes the new standard for the Pixel line. It remains to be seen if the software-based AI features, such as Magic Capture, will be enough to drive adoption of the more expensive base model or if the market will lean toward the heavily discounted Pixel 10.
