Honor unveils 'Robot Phone' with articulating gimbal arm and ARRI partnership
The new device merges embodied AI with a 200-megapixel camera to bring cinematic standards to mobile videography.
Honor has unveiled the "Robot Phone," a new category of smartphone that replaces static camera bumps with a physical, articulating robotic arm. Showcased at Mobile World Congress 2026, the device is designed to move beyond traditional screen-and-voice AI toward what the company calls "embodied AI interaction."
The device features a 4DoF (four degrees of freedom) gimbal system, which combines three gimbal axes with robotic arm positioning to enable professional-grade motion. At the end of this arm sits a 200-megapixel primary camera. When not in use, the robotic arm is concealed within a raised compartment on the back of the phone to maintain a streamlined profile. To ensure the hardware meets professional expectations, Honor has entered a strategic technical collaboration with cinema technology giant ARRI to integrate cinematic standards into the mobile imaging experience.
The shift to embodied AI
Honor, formerly a subsidiary of Huawei, has spent recent years carving out a position in the premium market through its ultra-thin foldable devices. The Robot Phone represents the next step in the company's broader vision for "Augmented Human Intelligence (AHI)." According to Honor, the goal is to move the smartphone experience away from reacting solely through screens and voice commands, effectively giving the next generation of devices "not only a brain, but also hands and feet."
Disrupting mobile videography
This integration of physical motion and high-resolution imaging marks a significant shift from software-based stabilization to hardware-driven "embodied AI." By building a professional gimbal directly into the chassis and partnering with ARRI, Honor is attempting to disrupt the mobile videography market. For content creators, this could potentially eliminate the need for external stabilizers and bulky professional rigs, as the phone can physically interact with its environment to achieve cinematic shots.
Timeline for release
While the device has only been previewed for now, it is expected to move from prototype to consumer availability in the coming year. Recent reports indicate the Honor Robot Phone is expected to launch in Q3 2026, with a specific target date of August 12, 2026. Industry observers will be watching to see if the mechanical complexity of the 4DoF system can be maintained at scale without compromising the device's durability.
