Google restores Now Playing notifications to Pixel devices

Google is bringing back silent notifications for the Now Playing feature on Pixel devices, restoring a key piece of functionality for users who track ambient music. The update allows identified songs to appear directly in the notification shade once again.

According to reports from Android Police and Android Authority, the restored notifications display the song title and artist of music playing in the user's environment. Beyond simple identification, the notifications include direct shortcuts to the user's listening history and their favorite songs. The architectural shift

Now Playing has been a signature Pixel-exclusive feature since the Pixel 2, using on-device machine learning to identify music without requiring an active internet connection. However, the user experience changed during the March Pixel Drop. At that time, Google transitioned Now Playing from being a part of Android System Intelligence into a standalone application. This architectural shift inadvertently stripped the feature's integration with the notification shade, leaving users to rely on a Quick Settings tile to see what was playing.
