Google Wallet enables NFC import for physical transit cards

Android users can now migrate physical transit balances and passes to their phones with a single tap.

Google Wallet has introduced a new feature that allows users to import physical transit cards and their remaining balances using NFC. This update removes the need for manual data entry or account linking, enabling commuters to digitize their transit passes by simply tapping a physical card against the back of an Android device.

The new functionality supports the transfer of remaining card balances, digital chip metadata, and active time-based passes, such as monthly commuter passes. The feature is being deployed via Google Play services app version 26.35 and later. However, the process is a permanent migration; once a physical card is transferred to the digital wallet, the plastic card is deactivated and can no longer be used.

The shift to closed-loop digitization

Previously, adding a physical transit card to Google Wallet was often a cumbersome process. Depending on the transit agency, users were frequently required to manually type in card details, link a specific agency account, or even visit a physical ticket desk to surrender their plastic card in exchange for a digital version. This update specifically streamlines the onboarding process for "closed-loop" transit systems—those that use their own NFC-compatible physical cards rather than open-payment systems like credit cards.

Industry implications and limitations

By reducing the friction associated with transitioning to digital wallets, Google is positioning its wallet to be more competitive with Apple Wallet. The ability to instantly migrate a balance via NFC encourages higher adoption of contactless payments by removing the primary barrier to entry: the manual setup.

Despite the streamlined import, Google maintains strict security and duplication limits. Transit passes can only be stored on one device at a time. This means that if a user wishes to move a pass from their phone to a smartwatch, they cannot simply sync the two; they must instead use a manual "Move Card to Another Device" process to transfer the credential.

What to watch

As the rollout continues through Google Play services, the primary variable remains agency support. While the technical infrastructure is now present in the app, the effectiveness of the feature depends on whether local transit authorities have enabled the necessary backend support for NFC transfers. Users should check their Google Play services version to see if the capability has reached their device.
