Google's Gemini Smart Home Transition Hits Reliability Roadblocks
Early testing reveals significant regressions in media playback and complex routines as Google replaces Assistant with generative AI.
Google is aggressively sunsetting Google Assistant in favor of Gemini across its entire hardware and software ecosystem, but early adopters warn the transition is far from seamless. The shift moves the primary user interface from a deterministic, command-based assistant to a probabilistic generative AI model, a change that is currently introducing instability into home automation.
Akshay Bhalla of Android Police proactively switched his smart home ecosystem to Gemini to test the transition ahead of the official Assistant shutdown. While basic functions remain operational, Bhalla reported significant regressions in reliability. Specifically, media playback became inconsistent, and complex routines involving multiple smart plugs and lights were either unreliable or completely broken. According to Bhalla, the experience was plagued by delays and inaccuracies, stating, "I couldn't get Gemini to play music as reliably as I used to with Google Assistant, and when it worked, it often didn't play what I wanted or had significant delays."
The Technical Shift
This transition applies broadly across Google's ecosystem, including phones, Wear OS watches, Android Auto, Nest, and Home devices. The move is not a simple software update but a fundamental change in how the system handles requests. Users are now required to manually enable "Hey Google" within Gemini settings and may need to repeat the Voice Match process to maintain hands-free functionality.
Furthermore, service integration now relies on "Personal Intelligence" settings. Users must explicitly enable Connected Apps—such as Spotify, YouTube Music, and Google Workspace—within the Gemini app to ensure these services continue to function. The transition also involves moving away from established "Routines" toward new "Scheduled Actions," a shift that has created friction for power users.
Why Stability is Slipping
For millions of users, the transition represents a potential loss of stability in critical home automation. The move from a deterministic system to a generative AI model has introduced latency and new failure points. Bhalla noted that location-based routine triggers, such as those activated by entering or leaving the home, were broken after the switch. Additionally, certain third-party hardware, such as the Sonos One, reportedly does not currently support Gemini.
This suggests that Google's "AI-first" approach is not yet a 1:1 replacement for the utility-focused control provided by the legacy Assistant. The introduction of probabilistic AI into a space where users expect binary reliability—either the light turns on or it doesn't—creates a gap in user trust.
What to Watch
As Google continues to integrate Gemini into the Home app, the primary concern remains whether generative AI can ever match the precision of a command-based system. While Google aims for a more conversational and intelligent home, the current state of the transition leaves many wondering if the trade-off in reliability is worth the upgrade. As Bhalla concluded, "I'm still not confident everything will work as well as it did with Assistant."
