Hatch has released a new Sleep Clock that integrates contactless sleep tracking into its ecosystem of sunrise alarms and sound machines. The device aims to provide data-driven sleep insights for users who prefer not to wear trackers to bed.

According to reports from The Cut and Yahoo Tech, the device utilizes motion-sensor technology to monitor a user's breathing and micro-movements. By tracking these patterns, the clock can determine sleep cycles without any physical contact with the body. To ensure optimal tracking accuracy, Hatch specifies that the device must be placed within four feet of the bed and positioned to face the user's chest.

Expanding the Sleep Ecosystem

This launch marks a strategic shift for Hatch, which previously focused on environmental sleep aids such as the Restore 2. While earlier products focused on creating the ideal atmosphere for sleep, the new Sleep Clock moves the company into the realm of biometric monitoring. The device combines this new tracking capability with existing features, including sunset routines, a sunrise alarm, and a comprehensive library of sleep sounds featuring podcasts, audiobooks, and ASMR.

The Friction of Wearables

The move toward contactless monitoring addresses a primary pain point in the sleep-tech market: the friction of wearables. Devices like the Oura ring or Fitbit require consistent wearing and regular charging, which can be a deterrent for some users. By moving the sensors to the bedside table, Hatch removes the need for physical hardware on the body, potentially lowering the barrier for a broader audience to adopt sleep hygiene tracking.
