Google to End Automatic Photos Backup via Drive for Desktop in 2026

Google is terminating the ability for its Drive for desktop application to automatically back up local folders directly to Google Photos. This service-to-service connection is scheduled to be severed on August 10, 2026.

While both Google Drive and Google Photos will continue to operate as independent services, the seamless synchronization between the desktop client and the photo cloud will cease. Once the August 10 deadline passes, the apps will no longer sync with each other, meaning Drive will no longer automatically send data to Google Photos.

The Shift in Desktop Syncing

For years, Google Drive for desktop served as a critical bridge for users who preferred managing their media via a local file system. The app allowed users to designate specific folders on their hard drives to be automatically mirrored into the Google Photos cloud.
