India has transformed its trade profile over the last 12 years, with electronics exports surging more than 11-fold to reach ₹4.24 lakh crore by FY2025-26. This rapid expansion marks a pivotal shift in the nation's economic strategy, moving away from traditional exports toward high-value technology manufacturing.

Electronics exports rose from approximately ₹38,263 crore to the current ₹4.24 lakh crore. In FY 2025, these exports reached USD 47.96 billion, officially establishing electronic goods as India's third-largest export category. The most dramatic growth occurred within the mobile phone segment, where exports surged 165-fold, climbing from ₹1,500 crore to ₹2.59 lakh crore over the period.

Strategic Policy Drivers

This growth results from a coordinated push to reduce import dependency and establish India as a global manufacturing hub under the 'Make in India' initiative. Central to this transition are several government-led frameworks, including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

Additional support has come from the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) and the Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0). These policies were designed to attract global players and incentivize local production, successfully positioning India as the world's second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones.

Economic and Social Impact

The transition has had a profound effect on the domestic labor market, generating 12 lakh jobs within the sector. Beyond the raw numbers, the industry has become a significant engine for social workforce diversification. In the mobile manufacturing segment specifically, women now account for nearly 70% of the workforce, highlighting the sector's role in integrating more women into the formal industrial economy.

Industry Implications

For the broader market, this surge represents a structural pivot in India's export economy. By scaling high-tech manufacturing, India is reducing its vulnerability to fluctuations in traditional commodity markets and building a sophisticated industrial base. The scalability of the mobile phone sector serves as a blueprint for other electronic components, suggesting that the country can compete on a global scale in precision engineering and assembly.

Future Outlook

As India continues to scale its semiconductor capabilities through the India Semiconductor Mission, the focus is expected to shift from assembly to the design and fabrication of core components. While the surge in finished goods like mobile phones has provided the initial momentum, the long-term goal remains the creation of a fully integrated electronics ecosystem that minimizes reliance on foreign imports for critical hardware.
