Android users can now reclaim control over their device's physical hardware using Key Mapper, a free and open-source application. The tool enables the remapping of hardware buttons to trigger custom shortcuts, bypassing standard menu navigation and screen-wake requirements.

According to reporting from Android Police, the application allows for highly specific triggers, including single taps, double presses, long presses, and complex sequences of button presses. For example, writer Anu Joy demonstrated using the app to turn volume button double-presses into shortcuts for media playback and Google Maps. Joy noted, "I could assign different actions to a double press, long press, or a sequence of button presses while keeping a regular tap reserved for changing the volume."

While many modern smartphones, such as the Google Pixel, offer limited built-in shortcuts like "Quick Tap," these native options are often restricted in scope. Key Mapper provides a more flexible alternative by allowing users to define complex triggers and send intents directly to other applications. The app supports over 100 different actions and is compatible not only with built-in phone buttons but also with external keyboards and game controllers.

To function, the app utilizes Android's Accessibility service, which is required to detect physical button presses and execute the corresponding custom shortcuts. This approach allows the app to provide deep customization without requiring the user to root their device or implement complex automation frameworks.
