London Underground targets 2026 for full 4G and 5G tunnel coverage
TfL and mobile operators are deploying shared infrastructure to eliminate deep-level black spots across the network.
London’s underground rail network is systematically eliminating the connectivity gaps that have historically left millions of commuters disconnected. Transport for London (TfL) and mobile network operators are currently deploying shared 4G and 5G infrastructure to provide comprehensive coverage across the city's deep-level tunnels.
The rollout, managed via Boldyn Networks, utilizes specialized radiating cables known as "leaky feeders" and distributed antenna arrays to propagate signals through the challenging subterranean environment. While the network is progressing toward full coverage, the target completion date has been shifted to the end of 2026, a delay from the original goal of late 2024. A significant milestone was reached in December 2024, when the Elizabeth line achieved full mobile coverage.
The technical challenge
Providing reliable mobile signals in the London Underground is a complex engineering feat. The depth of the tunnels and the age of the existing infrastructure create natural barriers that block standard radio waves. For years, this resulted in fragmented coverage where connectivity was often limited to stations, leaving passengers in total "black spots" for long stretches of their journeys between stops.
