Oura Inc. is facing a lawsuit alleging the company misled consumers regarding the accuracy of its sleep tracking technology. The suit specifically challenges claims of "95% accuracy," arguing such a figure is impossible because sleep is a neurological process occurring in the brain rather than the finger.

While the Oura Ring and similar wearables utilize heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and movement to estimate sleep stages, they cannot replicate the precision of polysomnography (PSG). PSG remains the clinical gold standard for sleep tracking because it measures brain activity via electroencephalography (EEG) directly. In contrast, consumer devices rely on peripheral biomarkers, including respiratory rate, body temperature, and movement, to infer brain activity. Oura has previously claimed its algorithm achieves a 79% agreement with PSG for sleep staging.

The Precision Gap

The surge in the consumer wearable market—led by firms like Oura, Whoop, and Apple—has been driven by a widespread "sleep crisis" and a growing public desire for nightly health breakdowns. However, a fundamental technical divide exists between these devices and medical equipment. Research indicates that while consumer trackers generally perform well in detecting total sleep and wakefulness, they struggle significantly more with precise sleep staging, such as distinguishing between REM, Deep, and Light sleep.

This inconsistency is evident across the industry. Some wrist-based trackers recognize sleeping epochs over 90% of the time, yet they may only identify wakefulness between 29% and 52% of the time. Because these devices lack EEG capabilities, there is an inherent gap between the data presented to the user and clinical reality, a discrepancy that has now become a legal flashpoint regarding how "accuracy" is marketed to health-conscious consumers.

Trends vs. Absolute Data

The distinction between absolute accuracy and trend accuracy is critical for user health. Experts warn that treating a sleep score as a medical report card can lead to orthosomnia—a condition where users develop anxiety over achieving "perfect" sleep data—or a false sense of security.

Despite these limitations, professionals suggest these tools remain valuable for identifying long-term patterns. Tracking the impact of alcohol or maintaining consistent wake times provides actionable data that can improve overall wellbeing without the need for a clinical sleep lab visit. Dr. Shireen Emad, an expert at Watches2U, notes that the healthiest approach is to view sleep trackers as helpful guides rather than report cards, stating that "technology should complement how you feel, not override it."

The outcome of the Oura litigation may force a shift in how wearable companies communicate the capabilities of their sensors. As the industry evolves, the focus is expected to move toward clearer disclosures regarding the difference between clinical diagnostics and consumer-grade estimations. For now, the primary challenge remains whether the market will accept "trend accuracy" as a sufficient standard for health monitoring.
