In a recent first-hand account shared by Android Police contributor Akshay Bhalla, the app's utility became clear during a 300-mile road trip in a rental EV. When the vehicle's battery dropped to 10%, Bhalla found that Google Maps provided vague and outdated charging information. In contrast, PlugShare enabled the driver to locate a compatible fast-charger just five miles away, preventing a potentially hours-long delay. Bhalla described the experience as a turning point, stating, "Range anxiety is real in EVs, and since I've experienced it firsthand, PlugShare is now an essential Android Auto app."

Unlike manufacturer-provided maps, PlugShare operates as a community-sourced platform. It provides a comprehensive map of charging stations that includes user-submitted photos, reviews, and a "PlugScore"—a rating from 1 to 10 that indicates the reliability of a specific station. This granular data is essential because it informs drivers whether a plug is actually functioning before they arrive.
To ensure compatibility across the fragmented charging landscape, the app supports multiple connector types, including CCS, NACS/J3400, CHAdeMO, and J1772. Through its Android Auto integration, users can filter these stations by connector type, charging speed, and available amenities, such as restrooms or eateries, without needing to handle a mobile device while driving. Bhalla likened the experience to using Waze, but specifically for the EV charging ecosystem.
