Qualcomm has revealed new details regarding the Hexagon NPU in the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro SoC. The hardware is specifically engineered to support "agentic AI," marking a strategic shift toward autonomous on-device intelligence.
The new NPU architecture introduces a transformer-focused Element Accelerator designed to handle generative and agentic AI workloads. To support these demands, the chip features a 50% increase in shared memory, a move Qualcomm says keeps frequently accessed model data closer to the NPU. This expansion is intended to reduce bottlenecks and maintain responsiveness as AI agents manage longer contexts, more tools, and concurrent tasks. Additionally, the NPU delivers up to 50% faster prefill for INT4 models and is optimized for multimodal models, low-latency action loops, and Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architectures.
