Samsung Leads €3 Billion Mistral AI Investment to Overhaul Chip Manufacturing

Samsung Electronics and Mistral AI have entered a strategic partnership to integrate advanced AI services into Samsung's semiconductor engineering and manufacturing operations. Announced during a state summit in Paris between South Korea and France, the alliance combines frontier software with industrial hardware to optimize the production of next-generation chips.
As part of the agreement, Samsung led a €3 billion (approximately $3.58 billion) Series D funding round for Mistral AI, securing a strategic equity stake. The round was co-led by PSG Equity and the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund, pushing Mistral AI's post-money valuation to over €21 billion (approximately $24.39 billion). Under the partnership terms, Samsung will deploy customized on-premises AI models, including Mistral Large, specifically to optimize semiconductor design, equipment optimization, and defect detection.
The Push for Sovereign AI
This collaboration arrives during a global shift toward "sovereign AI," a movement where nations strive to build independent technological capabilities to reduce dependence on U.S.-based leaders such as Anthropic and OpenAI. Mistral AI has positioned itself as a European champion in this landscape, having previously established a strategic relationship with Microsoft and partnered with the Dutch chipmaker ASML. To support this growth, Mistral AI has set an ambitious infrastructure goal to build 1 GW of compute capacity within Europe by 2030.
