Smart and Lynk Global Expand Satellite-to-Phone Tests in Philippines
Field trials in northern Luzon demonstrate SMS capabilities for standard smartphones in remote areas without terrestrial coverage.
Smart Communications and Lynk Global have expanded their Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite connectivity field tests to northern Luzon, marking a critical step in bringing mobile coverage to the Philippines' most isolated regions. The initiative aims to eliminate cellular dead zones and provide a resilient communication layer during natural disasters.
Recent trials conducted in Burgos, Bangui, and Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte successfully enabled SMS exchanges between standard smartphones in those remote areas and users in Metro Manila. These tests follow previous successful trials in Catanduanes, specifically within Barangay Marambong in Pandan. The D2D technology allows users to connect via satellite using commercial cell phones, removing the need for specialized hardware or satellite-specific handsets.
Overcoming Archipelagic Barriers
The Philippines' geography, characterized by thousands of islands and rugged mountainous terrain, creates significant hurdles for traditional cellular tower deployment. Many coastal and remote regions remain underserved because the cost and logistics of building ground infrastructure are prohibitive.
By implementing a satellite-to-phone layer, Smart—the wireless arm of PLDT—and Lynk Global are creating a complementary network that bypasses the need for physical towers in these "dead zones." This approach is specifically designed to support Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), ensuring that remote communities are not cut off from essential services.
Implications for Disaster Resilience
Beyond daily connectivity, the partnership focuses heavily on disaster response. In a region frequently hit by typhoons and earthquakes, terrestrial ground infrastructure is often destroyed, leaving affected populations unable to call for help or receive emergency alerts. D2D connectivity provides a fail-safe communication channel that remains operational regardless of the state of local towers.
"Direct-to-device satellite technology gives PLDT and Smart a powerful way to overcome the geographic challenges of serving an archipelago," said Menardo G. Jimenez, PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head. Lynk CEO Ramu Potarazu added that the Philippines' unique geography makes it an "ideal environment" to prove the real-world utility of the technology.
The Path to Scaling
While the current phase focuses on field testing and SMS capabilities, the long-term goal is to scale this technology for broader public use. If successful, the Philippines could become one of the first markets to deploy D2D satellite services at scale, potentially bridging the digital divide for maritime and isolated inland communities.
Industry observers are now watching for the transition from limited field tests to a wider commercial framework. While the technical feasibility of SMS exchange has been demonstrated in Ilocos Norte and Catanduanes, the timeline for a full commercial rollout in remote areas remains to be officially confirmed by both partners.
