Smart and Lynk Global Expand Satellite-to-Phone Trials to Batangas
Direct-to-device connectivity tests aim to maintain emergency communications when terrestrial networks fail during disasters.
Smart Communications and US-based Lynk Global have expanded their direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity trials to Batangas. The initiative seeks to ensure that critical emergency communications and public safety alerts remain available via standard mobile phones when terrestrial networks are disrupted by natural disasters.
The technology allows standard mobile phones to connect directly to satellites, removing the need for specialized satellite handsets. These latest tests in Batangas follow a series of previous D2D trials conducted in Catanduanes and Ilocos Norte, as the partners continue to validate the system's reliability across different regions of the Philippines.
The Infrastructure Gap
The Philippines is highly prone to typhoons and other natural disasters that frequently destroy or power down terrestrial cellular infrastructure. To mitigate these systemic vulnerabilities, Smart, under the PLDT Group, has partnered with Lynk Global to develop a backup communications layer. This D2D satellite technology is designed to bridge coverage gaps in rural, maritime, and disaster-stricken areas where traditional cell towers are either non-existent or non-functional.

Ensuring a resilient communication link during calamities can significantly improve disaster response and public safety. By maintaining a functional channel for emergency alerts and two-way communication, the technology has the potential to save lives when traditional networks are offline.
Menardo G. Jimenez Jr., PLDT chief operating officer and network head, emphasized the necessity of these investments. "Reliable communication is essential in times of crisis," Jimenez said. "As disasters continue to pose challenges to communities across the country, PLDT and Smart remain committed to investing in technologies that help ensure critical information reaches people when they need it most."
Jimenez added that the mission extends beyond the technical implementation, stating, "Our mission at PLDT is to be there for all Filipinos, whether they are talking to family abroad, or requesting for assistance from a rooftop in the middle of a calamity."
