Sony has officially commenced the rollout of Android 17 across its Xperia smartphone lineup, beginning with the flagship Xperia 1 VIII. The update marks a significant step in Sony's current software cycle, introducing new functional capabilities to its high-end hardware.

The rollout targets five specific models: the Xperia 1 VIII, Xperia 1 VII, Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 10 VIII, and Xperia 10 VII. For the lead device, the Xperia 1 VIII, the update is identified as software version 73.1.A.2.61 and carries a download size of approximately 1.2GB. A primary addition in this release is a new Desktop mode designed for external displays, a feature that Sony is also extending to older flagships, specifically the Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 1 VI.

A Shift in Software Strategy

This update arrives as part of a broader evolution in how Sony manages its device lifecycles. The Xperia 1 VIII launched with Android 16 and is backed by a promise of four major Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates. This represents a substantial increase in long-term software support compared to previous Sony generations, which historically lagged behind the industry's most aggressive update schedules.

Productivity and Market Positioning

The introduction of Desktop mode is intended to transform Xperia flagships into more versatile productivity tools, allowing users to leverage their phones as primary computing devices when connected to a monitor. By combining these functional upgrades with an extended four-OS update window, Sony is signaling a strategic shift to better compete with the long-term software commitments established by rivals such as Samsung and Google.

What to Watch

While the rollout has begun for the Xperia 1 VIII, users of the other four eligible models should monitor their system settings for the update notification. It remains to be seen how the Desktop mode performs across the older Xperia 1 VI and VII hardware, and whether Sony will introduce further feature refinements as the rollout expands to the Xperia 10 series.
