T-Mobile CFO: Starlink Mobile Cannot Defeat the Laws of Physics
Peter Osvaldik argues that satellite signals' inability to penetrate buildings makes SpaceX a non-threat to terrestrial wireless networks.
T-Mobile CFO Peter Osvaldik has dismissed Elon Musk’s ambitions for Starlink Mobile to disrupt the wireless industry, arguing that satellite technology cannot replace traditional cellular infrastructure. Speaking at Citi's 2026 Global TMT Conference, Osvaldik asserted that the venture is not a competitive threat from a wireless perspective.
Osvaldik centered his critique on the physical limitations of satellite connectivity, specifically the inability of signals to penetrate solid objects. He noted that satellite signals cannot pass through buildings, walls, or even a Tesla windscreen. "You can have 1 million satellites up there with all the spectrum in the world, you can't break the fundamental laws of physics," Osvaldik stated, ridiculing the notion that SpaceX could bypass the need for terrestrial towers.
The Battle for Connectivity
This clash comes as SpaceX develops "Starlink Mobile," a service designed to provide direct-to-cell connectivity. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has previously claimed the service would acquire customers from the "Big Three" carriers—AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile—by eliminating dead zones. Shotwell expressed confidence in the product's appeal, stating, "I anticipate us to be able to acquire quite a few of their customers because I think our service will be better."
To achieve this, SpaceX's strategy relies on a hybrid approach: deploying direct-to-cell satellites alongside femtocells. These femtocells are essentially Starlink dishes installed on the roofs of houses and businesses to provide mobile spectrum connectivity to the immediate area.
Industry Implications
The disagreement highlights a deep divide between the vision of satellite-based disruption and the reality of terrestrial engineering. The wireless market generates roughly $600 billion annually, making it a high-stakes target for SpaceX. However, established carriers maintain that the physical constraints of urban environments make a full replacement of cell towers impossible. For T-Mobile, the reliance on femtocells is seen as an impractical substitute for the massive, integrated network of towers that currently sustain global mobile traffic.
What to Watch
As Starlink Mobile moves toward wider deployment, the industry will be watching to see if SpaceX can overcome the signal penetration issues cited by Osvaldik. While the service may succeed in filling gaps in rural or remote areas, its ability to penetrate the "concrete jungle" of major cities remains the primary point of contention. Whether SpaceX can scale its femtocell deployment to a level that truly threatens traditional carriers remains to be seen.
