Tanzania Intensifies Multi-Agency Crackdown on Mobile Fraud
Government regulators and telcos target fraudulent lines as mobile subscriptions hit 116.95 million.
The Tanzanian government is intensifying a multi-agency offensive against mobile fraud to protect its rapidly expanding digital economy. The Ministry for Information, Communication and Information Technology is leading a coordinated effort between the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), security agencies, and telecom operators to secure the nation's mobile networks.
Recent enforcement actions have already yielded results. Between April and June 2026, authorities identified 7,334 mobile lines linked to fraudulent activities, according to Ms. Angellah Kairuki, Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology. This figure represents a 25.29% decrease from the 9,817 fraudulent lines detected in the previous quarter spanning January to March.
The Digital Expansion
This crackdown comes as Tanzania experiences a massive surge in connectivity. By June 2026, mobile subscriptions in the country reached 116.95 million, while internet subscriptions climbed to 62.79 million. Smartphone penetration has also risen to 44.74%, reflecting a shift in how citizens access essential services. As more Tanzanians rely on mobile networks for government interactions, business operations, and financial services, the surface area for potential cybercrime has expanded proportionally.
Protecting the Ecosystem
The shift toward a collaborative model involving regulators, telcos, and security forces is seen as critical for maintaining public trust in digital infrastructure. Because fraudsters often exploit the gaps between network operators and law enforcement, a unified response is required to protect the integrity of the digital ecosystem. Industry leaders are also emphasizing user vigilance; Mr. Charles Kamoto, Managing Director of Airtel Tanzania, has urged consumers to never share one-time passwords (OTPs) with third parties.
Next Steps
To maintain the downward trend in fraudulent activity, the government has scheduled a special meeting for August 2026. The session will focus on identifying new countermeasures and refining the cooperation framework between the TCRA and private operators. Officials will continue to monitor network traffic and conduct investigations to preempt new fraud tactics as the country's digital footprint grows.
