TCL has launched the P80 Ultra, a midrange smartphone that integrates its proprietary NxtPaper eye-care technology with an AMOLED panel for the first time. The device attempts to bridge the gap between high-performance mobile displays and the reduced eye strain typically associated with e-paper readers.
The P80 Ultra is centered around a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display featuring a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 3,200 nits. To manage the transition between visual modes, TCL included a physical side key that allows users to toggle instantly between the standard AMOLED experience and NxtPaper mode. Among these options is a "Max Ink" mode, which suppresses background apps and non-essential notifications to extend battery life for up to seven days.
Evolution of Eye-Care Hardware
TCL previously deployed NxtPaper technology on LCD panels to mitigate glare and blue light, but those displays often lacked the color accuracy and brightness found in flagship devices. The shift to AMOLED in the P80 series is designed to eliminate this compromise, providing a high-fidelity screen for media consumption while retaining a dedicated mode for long-form reading.
