The pursuit of the highest possible image quality in cinema comes with a significant acoustic cost. IMAX 15/70 film cameras are notoriously loud, producing a combination of mechanical rattling and high-pitched whining that can drown out on-set audio.
This noise is the result of the sheer physics required to move 65mm negative film. Unlike conventional film, the 15/70 format moves film horizontally and utilizes 15 sprocket holes per frame rather than the standard five. When shooting at 24 frames per second, the camera must move 360 sprocket holes every second. This totals approximately 5.6 feet of film per second, or 336 feet per minute, creating a violent mechanical vibration.
Beyond the movement of the film itself, a specialized vacuum plate system is required to maintain image sharpness. This system pulls the film flat against the plate during exposure to prevent curls from ruining the focus, which in turn generates a constant, high-pitched mechanical hum.
The Logistics of Silence
Because the noise is so intrusive, filmmakers must employ extreme measures to capture usable audio. Many rely on Automated Dialog Replacement (ADR) in post-production, where actors re-record their lines in a studio. On set, crews use sound-dampening enclosures known as "barneys" or heavy "blimps" to muffle the hardware. These blimps add massive bulk to the equipment; older IMAX cameras in a blimp can weigh as much as 275 pounds, while the newer Keighley system is reported to weigh over 300 pounds.
Industry Implications
These technical limitations fundamentally dictate how a film is shot. While the 15/70 format is prized for its superior scale and resolution, its noise profile makes it ideal for loud action sequences but problematic for intimate, dialogue-driven scenes. This has created a divide in modern cinematography, pushing some productions toward digital "Filmed for IMAX" cameras, which avoid these mechanical issues entirely.
The Future of 70mm
Despite the rise of digital, the aesthetic of 70mm film remains a gold standard for many directors. The industry continues to seek a balance between image quality and audio viability through custom engineering. The Keighley camera represents the latest attempt to solve this conflict, featuring a redesigned blimp intended to allow for the recording of synchronized dialogue on set.
