TCL P80 Ultra Debuts World's First NXTPAPER AMOLED Display
The new mid-range smartphone blends high-contrast OLED performance with a matte, e-ink-style reading experience via a physical hardware switch.
TCL has launched the P80 Ultra, a mid-range smartphone introducing the industry's first NXTPAPER AMOLED display. The device bridges the gap between high-performance smartphones and dedicated e-readers by offering a screen that pivots between vivid colors and a matte, eye-comfort reading mode.
The P80 Ultra features a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 3,200 nits. To manage this dual nature, TCL included a dedicated physical slider that allows users to toggle between standard AMOLED and two specific NXTPAPER modes. "Paper Mode" transforms the UI into an e-ink style, while "Max Ink" further simplifies the homescreen and suppresses most notifications to minimize distractions. According to GSMArena, the result is "the best of both worlds."
Evolution of Eye Comfort
This launch marks a technical evolution for TCL, which previously deployed NXTPAPER technology on LCD panels to reduce glare and blue light. While those earlier versions were praised for eye comfort, they lacked the deep blacks and high contrast inherent to OLED technology. By integrating a matte, glare-reducing layer directly with an AMOLED panel, the P80 Ultra removes the previous trade-off between display quality and visual wellness. Ben Johnston of Expert Reviews described the combination of tactile matte textures and AMOLED contrast as a "fantastic screen."
Hardware and Durability
Under the hood, the device is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite chipset paired with 8GB of RAM and storage options of either 256GB or 512GB. The camera array is headlined by a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto lens with optical image stabilization (OIS), supported by an 8MP ultrawide lens.
To support its reading-centric features, the phone is equipped with a 5,800mAh battery and 45W wired charging. TCL claims that when the device is set to "Max Ink" mode, the runtime can extend up to seven days. The build is designed for longevity, carrying an IP68 water and dust resistance rating alongside MIL-STD 810H durability certification.
Market Positioning
By focusing on hardware-level wellness rather than just raw specifications, TCL is attempting to carve out a niche in a crowded mid-range market. The P80 Ultra targets users who consume significant amounts of text but do not want to carry a separate e-reader. This strategy shifts the value proposition from pure speed to utility and digital health.
The TCL P80 Ultra is currently available in Europe with a starting price of €549. Observers will be watching to see if this hybrid display approach gains traction with general consumers or remains a specialized tool for power readers.
