Thai Mobile Cyberattacks Jump 127% Despite Region-Leading Security Awareness
A sharp rise in mobile threats in Thailand reveals a growing gap between consumer knowledge and the evolving sophistication of cybercrime.
Mobile-device cyberattacks in Thailand surged by 127% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2026. The spike is particularly notable because Thai consumers possess the highest level of cybercrime awareness in the Asia-Pacific region, suggesting that knowledge alone is no longer a sufficient defense.
According to data from Nation Thailand, 39% of Thai consumers reported being aware of cybercrime risks, the highest rate among surveyed Asia-Pacific markets. Despite this, the volume of attacks continues to climb. Thailand is not alone in this trend; other regional markets saw similar surges, with Taiwan recording a massive 373% increase, followed by Sri Lanka at 132%, Bangladesh at 108%, China at 69%, and the Philippines at 28%. In terms of sheer volume, India and Indonesia faced the highest number of attacks, recording 18,187 and 15,163 incidents, respectively.
The Digital Shift
This vulnerability comes as smartphones have become the primary gateway for financial and professional activity across Asia-Pacific. The region's reliance on mobile infrastructure is profound, with digital wallets now accounting for roughly 70% of all online payments. Furthermore, online shopping usage in the region has reached 80%, significantly outpacing the global average of 71%.
As mobile connectivity expands, the attack surface grows. Projections indicate that the number of mobile subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to reach 2.11 billion by 2030, providing a vast and expanding target for malicious actors.
The Security Gap
The disconnect between high awareness and rising attack rates highlights a critical failure in current security paradigms. Choon Hong Chee, Kaspersky’s head of consumer channel for Asia-Pacific, noted that smartphones are often not protected to the same level as personal computers, even though they now serve as the central hub for users’ financial, social, and professional lives.
This trend suggests that the speed of threat evolution is outstripping the ability of users to protect themselves through manual vigilance. The data underscores an urgent need for "embedded security," where protection is integrated directly into applications rather than relying on users to install and manage separate security software.

Industry analysts suggest that as mobile devices continue to replace PCs for sensitive transactions, the focus must shift from user education to systemic resilience. The current trajectory indicates that unless security becomes a native feature of the mobile ecosystem, the gap between awareness and actual safety will continue to widen.
