The primary risk stems from discoverability, which allows hackers within close range to potentially connect to a device without permission if authentication is not required. Beyond individual hackers, corporate entities also leverage the protocol; retailers such as Walmart and Target have used Bluetooth beacon technology to track shopper movements within stores, though this typically requires the user to have the retailer's branded app installed with the necessary permissions granted.

The Landscape of Wireless Vulnerabilities
