Using a high-wattage laptop charger to power a smartphone is safe for the vast majority of modern devices. This compatibility is made possible by standardized communication protocols that prevent hardware damage regardless of the charger's maximum capacity.
The safety of this practice relies on USB Power Delivery (USB-PD), a protocol developed by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). USB-PD enables a charger and a connected device to communicate and negotiate specific voltage and current levels before any power is transferred. This handshake ensures that the hardware operates within its designed limits.
Crucially, the power dynamic is governed by the receiving device rather than the power source. It is not the charger pushing power into the phone, but rather the phone pulling exactly what it needs. Because the phone controls the intake, a 100W laptop charger will not charge a phone faster than that phone's own maximum rated input, such as 20W. If a device does not support the USB-PD standard, a compliant charger is designed to default to a safe, lower output, typically 5V.
