Vivaldi 8.0 Brings Desktop-Style Accordion Tabs to Android
The Chromium-based browser introduces a new way to navigate tab groups without leaving the active page.
Vivaldi has launched Accordion Tabs for its Android browser, allowing users to navigate grouped tabs directly within the browsing interface. This update aims to bring a desktop-level productivity workflow to mobile devices by removing the need for a separate tab switcher.
Introduced in Vivaldi version 8.0, the Accordion Tabs feature enables users to move between grouped tabs while they are actively browsing. Unlike traditional mobile tab management, this implementation integrates the groups into the active UI. To use the feature, users must manually enable it by navigating to Settings > Tabs > Tab Stacking and selecting 'Accordion'. Vivaldi, which is based on the Chromium engine, also continues to provide its built-in ad blocker alongside this new navigation tool.
The Mobile Tab Struggle
While mainstream mobile browsers such as Chrome and Firefox have offered tab grouping for several years, their workflows generally remain restrictive. In those browsers, organizing or switching between groups typically requires the user to exit the current page and enter a dedicated tab switcher mode. This creates a fragmented experience for users who need to reference multiple sources simultaneously.
Bridging the Productivity Gap
Vivaldi's approach targets power users who perform complex planning or heavy research on mobile devices. By allowing seamless navigation between tab stacks without interrupting the viewing experience, the browser bridges the gap between mobile and desktop productivity. This allows for a 'heavy lifting' workflow on Android that previously required a laptop or PC, potentially attracting users who find mainstream tab management insufficient for professional use.
