Danganronpa 2x2 Delayed to 2027 as Creator Jokes About GTA VI Distractions
Spike Chunsoft pushes back its expanded remake to ensure quality and avoid a clash with AAA giants.
Spike Chunsoft has delayed the release of Danganronpa 2x2, an expanded remake of the cult-classic mystery title Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Originally slated for a 2026 launch, the project has been pushed to 2027 to allow for further development and a more strategic release window.
Producer Shohei Sakakibara stated that the additional time is necessary to ensure the best possible player experience. He specifically noted a desire to avoid launching alongside a major AAA release, which often crowds the market and suppresses visibility for niche titles. However, the delay took a humorous turn when series creator Kazutaka Kodaka jokingly suggested his own gaming habits played a role. Kodaka claimed the shift was inevitable because he "wouldn’t have time to make the game while playing Grand Theft Auto VI."
Modernizing a Cult Classic
The Danganronpa franchise, created by Kodaka, is renowned for its high-stakes "killing game" premise and visual novel storytelling. Danganronpa 2x2 is designed to modernize the second entry in the series, moving beyond a simple port to provide a significant overhaul of the original experience.
Among the most notable additions is a new 3D World Map, replacing the flatter environments of the previous iteration. The remake also introduces "Slayhem" mode, a substantial gameplay expansion featuring branching narrative paths. This mode allows players to encounter alternate victims, different culprits, and entirely new murder tricks, adding a layer of replayability and unpredictability to the mystery.
The Gravity of GTA VI
While Kodaka's comments were framed as a joke, the situation underscores the immense cultural and industry-wide gravity of Grand Theft Auto VI. The tendency for developers to shift schedules to avoid competing with Rockstar Games' flagship titles is a recurring theme in the industry. In this instance, the delay highlights how a single AAA launch can influence the release calendars of unrelated projects, whether through genuine market fear or the shared desire of developers to experience the game as players.
Platform Availability
Despite the setback, the game is targeting a wide array of hardware to maximize its reach. Danganronpa 2x2 will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Notably, the title is also confirmed for the Nintendo Switch and its successor, the Switch 2.
Fans will now have to wait until 2027 to see how the Slayhem mode alters the original tragedy of the island, provided the development team can resist the lure of Los Santos long enough to finish the project.
