Double Fine Teases Brutal Legend 2 With Impossible $100 Million Stretch Goal

The studio returns to crowdfunding for a new game jam, adding a massive joke goal for the cult classic sequel.

Double Fine has launched a new Kickstarter campaign that offers a glimmer of hope for fans of Brutal Legend, provided they can raise an astronomical sum of money. The studio has set a stretch goal of $100 million to trigger the development of Brutal Legend 2.

The campaign's primary objective is to fund "Amnesia Fortnight 2026, Indie Reboot." This initiative is a two-week game jam designed to produce a small, retail-ready game that will be published under the newly established "Double Fine Action Labs" label. While the jam is the core focus, the studio included the sequel to its heavy-metal action title as a high-tier incentive, stating via the Kickstarter page: "We make Brutal Legend 2. Yes, really. Beyond that, we'll have to wait and see…"

A Tradition of Prototyping

Amnesia Fortnight has been a staple of Double Fine's internal culture since 2007. The tradition involves developers pitching and prototyping experimental ideas in a high-pressure environment. This process has historically served as a fertile breeding ground for the studio's commercial releases, with titles such as Costume Quest and Iron Brigade originating from these internal jams. By bringing this process to Kickstarter, the studio is inviting public participation in its creative pipeline.

Independence and IP Control

The timing of the campaign follows a significant shift in the studio's corporate structure. Double Fine recently regained its independence and full ownership of its gameography, including the rights to Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, after separating from Microsoft Xbox in 2026. This separation comes amid a period of industry-wide layoffs that impacted the gaming sector throughout the year.

Because the studio now owns its intellectual properties outright, it possesses the legal autonomy to develop sequels to its legacy titles without corporate approval from a parent company. This newfound control is what allows the studio to officially, if jokingly, tease a follow-up to the 2009 cult hit.

The Reality of the Goal

Industry analysts and observers view the $100 million figure as a joke reflecting the studio's signature irreverent humor. To put the number in perspective, the goal is vastly higher than typical crowdfunding successes in the gaming space. By setting the bar at such an unreachable level, Double Fine is able to acknowledge fan demand for the sequel while keeping the actual focus on the smaller-scale Indie Reboot project.

What remains to be seen is whether the "Double Fine Action Labs" label will become a permanent fixture for the studio's smaller experiments. For now, the development of Brutal Legend 2 remains a theoretical possibility tied to a financial milestone that is widely considered impossible to achieve.
