FromSoftware Patches Elden Ring to Block Tarnished Pack Item Duplication
An emergency update closes a loophole that allowed paid DLC items to be shared for free across platforms.
FromSoftware deployed an emergency update to Elden Ring on Tuesday, September 8, to eliminate a duplication exploit affecting paid content. The patch, version 1.17.1, was released across all platforms to ensure the exclusivity of digital assets included in the game's latest expansion.
The update specifically targets a glitch involving the Tarnished Pack, a DLC priced at $4.99 / £4. The pack introduces two new starting classes—the Idus Knight and the Heavy Knight—alongside new armor sets and skins for the mount Torrent. According to FromSoftware via X, the patch fixes an issue in multiplayer where "DLC-specific items could be obtained when not normally eligible," noting that no additional content was included in the update.
The Switch 2 Connection
This technical correction arrives alongside the launch of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2. To maintain parity between the new console release and the existing player base, FromSoftware released the Tarnished Pack as a standalone DLC for players on other platforms. This allowed veteran players to access the same extras bundled with the Switch 2 version of the game.
Protecting Digital Revenue
The duplication exploit directly undermined the monetization of the Tarnished Pack by allowing paid content to be distributed to non-purchasers for free. By closing this loophole, FromSoftware is prioritizing the protection of its DLC revenue streams and the integrity of its paid digital assets. The speed of the deployment suggests a high priority on preventing the widespread unauthorized distribution of the new classes and equipment.
Looking Ahead
While the duplication glitch has been addressed, the community continues to monitor how the Tarnished Edition performs on the Nintendo Switch 2. FromSoftware has not indicated whether further stability patches are planned for the 1.17 cycle, but the rapid response to the duplication issue suggests a vigilant approach to the game's current economy.
