GTA 6 replaces legacy face-button sprint with L3 stick click
Rockstar Games is abandoning the series' iconic face-button sprint mechanic in favor of the modern industry standard.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is moving away from a defining control mechanic that has persisted across the series for nearly a quarter-century. The upcoming title will replace the traditional face-button sprint input with a more contemporary control scheme.
According to a Q&A with content creator MikeShowSha, who was among a small group invited to view the game, the default sprint command in GTA 6 is now clicking the left stick (L3). This replaces the long-standing requirement for players to tap or hold a face button—specifically the X button on PlayStation or the A button on Xbox—to increase movement speed. The change was first detailed by Eurogamer.
A legacy of idiosyncratic controls
For nearly 25 years, the Grand Theft Auto series maintained a unique approach to character movement. While most open-world titles adopted standardized inputs, Rockstar Games stuck to a scheme where sprinting was tied to the primary action buttons. Although some previous Rockstar titles provided alternate control options, the face-button sprint remained the default, becoming one of the most recognizable and idiosyncratic hallmarks of the franchise's user interface.
Modernizing the experience
The shift to L3 reflects a broader modernization of the series' controls to align with current industry standards. In the contemporary third-person shooter and open-world genres, clicking the left stick has become the near-universal standard for sprinting. By removing this legacy mechanic, Rockstar is bringing GTA in line with the expectations of modern gamers and reducing the friction associated with a control scheme that had become increasingly out of step with its peers.
Looking ahead
This adjustment to the basic movement system suggests a wider effort to refine the user experience for the next generation of hardware. While the control change is confirmed, players will be waiting to see if Rockstar provides optional legacy mappings for longtime fans of the original system. GTA 6 is currently scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
