Invoke Studios Rejects 'Gigantic' Open World for D&D Game 'Warlock'
The studio is prioritizing a denser experience over raw map size to avoid the bloat of massive RPGs.
Invoke Studios is steering its upcoming Dungeons & Dragons title, 'Warlock,' away from the trend of massive, hundred-hour open worlds. During Gamescom 2026, the studio clarified that the project aims for a more curated experience rather than a sprawling map that demands hundreds of hours to complete.
Developed in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, 'Warlock' is a third-person, single-player open-world action-adventure game. Dominic Guay, Studio Head at Invoke Studios, stated that while the game will be longer than a typical linear title, it will not be "gigantic like some open worlds that are hundreds and hundreds of hours." A gameplay demo showcased the protagonist, Kaatri, and featured a location called the village of Crickshank.
A Shift Toward Density
The design philosophy behind 'Warlock' is a response to a growing industry tension between "bloated" open worlds and denser, more focused environments. By avoiding the excessive travel distances and filler content often found in massive RPGs, Invoke Studios intends to create a world where exploration provides quicker, more meaningful rewards. This approach seeks to maintain a tighter pace, ensuring that the player's time is spent on impactful content rather than empty space.
Strategic Implications
This decision marks a departure from the expectations set by recent D&D adaptations, such as Baldur's Gate 3, where completionist runs can exceed 180 hours. By rejecting the "100-hour slog," Invoke Studios is betting that players will prefer reward density over raw scale. This shift suggests a move toward a more intentional gameplay loop where the quality of encounters takes precedence over the quantity of map markers.
What to Watch
As 'Warlock' moves toward release, the industry will be watching to see if this leaner approach to the open world can satisfy a fanbase accustomed to the immense depth of recent CRPGs. While the core identity of the game as a focused action-adventure is set, further details on the specific length of the campaign and the depth of its side content remain to be seen.
