Konami Investigates Performance Mode Bugs in Silent Hill 2 After Patch 1.07
The publisher is addressing new visual glitches on PS5 and PS5 Pro following an update intended to improve image quality.
Konami has confirmed it is investigating new technical issues affecting the Performance Mode of the Silent Hill 2 remake on PS5 and PS5 Pro. The problems emerged following the release of Patch 1.07, which was intended to refine the game's visual presentation.
According to Konami UK, the team is currently "investigating these issues and looking into potential solutions." While Patch 1.07 was specifically designed to boost overall image quality, reduce shadow flickering, and improve fog rendering, players have reported a new set of regressions. These include "crushed blacks," shadow strobing, and overly dark shadows, as well as pixelation during mirror scenes. These specific bugs appear to be isolated to Performance Mode, while the 30fps Quality Mode remains unaffected.
A Pattern of Technical Instability
Developed by Bloober Team and published by Konami, the Silent Hill 2 remake has faced a challenging technical road since its debut. The title has been plagued by graphical glitches from the start, and its launch on the PS5 Pro was particularly scrutinized. Early analysis from Digital Foundry highlighted significant image stability problems and a problematic implementation of PSSR upscaling, suggesting that the game struggled to leverage the high-end hardware effectively.
Implications for the PS5 Pro
These recurring stability issues are particularly damaging given the marketing surrounding the PS5 Pro. The continued presence of glaring visual bugs on the latest hardware undermines the "Pro Enhanced" promise and points to ongoing quality assurance struggles. This technical friction stands in stark contrast to the game's commercial and critical performance; the remake has been a significant hit, selling over one million copies within its first week of release.
What to Watch
Konami has not yet provided a timeline for a follow-up fix, but the publisher has asked for patience as they work toward a solution. The industry will be watching to see if the next update can finally stabilize the image on the PS5 Pro or if the title will continue to struggle with the hardware's specific upscaling and rendering requirements.
