Marvel Rivals to Slash Install Size via Massive Texture Overhaul
A Season 9.5 update will shrink the game's footprint by up to 40GB on PC, though players must re-download the full package.
Marvel Rivals is set to drastically reduce its storage requirements through a comprehensive texture compression overhaul arriving in the Season 9.5 update. The move aims to reclaim significant hard drive space for players across all supported platforms.
According to Eurogamer, the update will shrink the PC install size by approximately 40GB, representing a decrease of over 57%. Console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox will see a more modest but still significant reduction of roughly 15GB, bringing the footprint down from 73GB. Creative Director Guangyun Chen stated that the team is implementing this overhaul to shrink the game's footprint "without sacrificing a single pixel of visual fidelity."
The Cost of Optimization
While the storage gains are substantial, the process of applying these changes is not a standard patch. Players will be required to re-download the entire game package to implement the new compression. This requirement ensures the file structure is fully optimized, but it means users will need a stable internet connection and temporary bandwidth to facilitate the full reinstall. The update is expected to go live on August 7th.
A Strategic Technical Pivot
Marvel Rivals launched at the end of 2024 and has maintained a strong presence as a top-played title on Xbox and PlayStation. Despite its commercial success and a content roadmap closely tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the title has recently navigated a turbulent relationship with its community. A previous update introducing UI changes sparked player backlash, contributing to a "mixed" rating for the game on Steam.
Why Storage Matters
This optimization arrives at a critical time for the industry. As modern AAA titles continue to balloon in size, the resulting pressure on SSD storage and RAM has become a primary pain point for gamers. By reducing the footprint by over half on PC, the developers are addressing a systemic issue in game distribution. Technical optimizations that maintain visual quality while lowering hardware barriers are generally viewed as essential for long-term player retention in the live-service market.
Looking Ahead
Industry observers will be watching to see if this technical win helps stabilize the game's reception on Steam. While the storage reduction is a welcome utility, the developers must still address the underlying UI complaints that have soured some of the community's sentiment. For now, the focus remains on the August 7th rollout and whether the re-download process creates further friction for the user base.
