Miami-Dade Mayor's 'Vice City' Branding Plan Sparks Police Backlash
A proposal to turn public infrastructure into a GTA VI advertisement has ignited a political firestorm between city hall and law enforcement.
The office of Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has proposed a massive real-world marketing takeover to promote the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The plan seeks to transform the region's public infrastructure into a living advertisement for Rockstar Games' fictional "Vice City," a setting heavily inspired by Miami.
According to a pitch deck submitted to Rockstar Games on June 29, the proposal envisions an "immersive arrival experience" at Miami International Airport, featuring Vice City signage and aircraft with GTA 6 liveries. The branding would extend into the city's transit and utility systems, including specially designed manhole covers and branded Metromover skytrains. Additionally, the Mayor's office suggested a dockyard installation inspired by the game's "Port Gellhorn" and a "Vice City Motor Fest" to showcase lowriders and customized vehicles in a family-appropriate environment.
A Clash of Values
The proposal has met fierce resistance from local law enforcement and judiciary officials. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez issued a joint statement arguing that the partnership is fundamentally contradictory to the mission of public safety. Sheriff Cordero-Stutz pointed out that the game's fictional world is built on murder, robbery, drug trafficking, and violence against law enforcement—the very activities her office works daily to prevent.
In their joint statement, Cordero-Stutz and Bermudez asserted that the county should promote the actual Miami-Dade they have worked to build, rather than a fictional version of the community defined by crime and violence.
Political and Budgetary Friction
While the dispute is framed as an ethical conflict, it is underscored by deep political divisions. Mayor Levine Cava is a Democrat, while Sheriff Cordero-Stutz and Commissioner Bermudez are Republicans. This ideological split is further complicated by financial stakes, as the opposing officials are currently competing for funding allocations in the 2027 budget.
The Tourism vs. Ethics Dilemma
This standoff highlights a growing tension in municipal governance: the desire to leverage global pop-culture juggernauts for economic gain versus the professional concerns of public safety officials. By aligning with one of the most anticipated entertainment releases in history, the Mayor's office aims to boost tourism and global visibility. However, critics argue that the cost of this visibility is the implicit glorification of criminal activity within the city's own public spaces.
What's Next
It remains to be seen if Rockstar Games will accept the proposal or if political pressure from the Sheriff's office will force the Mayor to withdraw the pitch. As the 2027 budget negotiations approach, the "Vice City" proposal may serve as a flashpoint for broader disputes over how Miami-Dade chooses to project its image to the world.
