NetEase Schedules Open-World Social RPG Ananta for January 2027
The 'everything' game blends urban exploration and supernatural investigation in a free-to-play sandbox.
NetEase Games has officially scheduled the launch of its ambitious open-world title, Ananta, for January 15, 2027. The announcement, delivered during Gamescom Opening Night Live, positions the title as a high-budget "everything" game designed to merge multiple AAA genres into a single social RPG experience.
Accompanying the date was a new trailer detailing the game's core systems. Ananta features two sprawling open-world cities that players can navigate using a variety of vehicles, including cars, scooters, and futuristic craft. Beyond traditional driving, the game incorporates advanced traversal mechanics reminiscent of the Spider-Man series to facilitate movement across its urban environments. Gameplay also centers on supernatural investigation, with players taking on the role of an investigator battling evil entities.
A Strategic Sandbox Approach
NetEase is developing Ananta to function as a social sandbox, blending an anime aesthetic with the structural depth of a massive urban simulation. By adopting an "everything" game philosophy, the developer aims to synthesize elements from various top-tier titles to create a versatile platform for player interaction and exploration. This approach distinguishes it from traditional RPGs by prioritizing a living, breathing city environment over linear progression.
Shifting the Monetization Model
In a departure from many modern anime-style titles, Ananta will be free-to-play but will avoid gacha-style character unlocks. According to NetEase, monetization will instead focus on cosmetics, vehicles, and decorations. This strategic shift suggests an attempt to capture the social-sandbox market by removing the predatory barriers often associated with character acquisition, focusing instead on player expression and customization within the open world.
Market Positioning and Outlook
Industry analysts note that the 2027 release window is a calculated move to avoid the "blast radius" of Grand Theft Auto 6. By scheduling the launch well after the anticipated GTA 6 window, NetEase avoids direct competition with the industry's most dominant urban sandbox. The primary focus moving forward will be whether the game's social RPG structure and cosmetic-driven economy can successfully attract the massive audience currently dominated by GTA Online. For now, the industry will be watching to see if NetEase can deliver on the technical promise of its sprawling dual-city map.
