Wizards of the Coast unveils 'Warlock' action-adventure game for 2027

The first gameplay trailer showcases a dark fantasy open world and a narrative centered on a pact for 'Raw Magic'.

Wizards of the Coast and its internal development team, Invoke Studios, have unveiled the first gameplay trailer for 'Warlock' during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The reveal marks a significant expansion of the Dungeons & Dragons brand into the high-fidelity action-adventure genre.

The eight-minute presentation detailed a third-person, single-player experience set within a dark fantasy open world. The gameplay focuses on magic-based combat, centering on the story of Kaatri, a veteran warrior played by Tricia Helfer. In the game, Kaatri enters into a pact to acquire otherworldly powers, guided by a patron named Tasha, played by Maggie Robertson, who instructs her in the use of "Raw Magic." Jeff Hattem, VP of creative at Invoke, described this specific brand of magic as "strange and unnatural and not very clean.

A Strategic Shift in Development

Invoke Studios, composed of veterans from the previously acquired Tuque Games, is leading the project. This follows the studio's work on 'Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance,' a title that met with a divisive reception from players and critics. With 'Warlock,' Wizards of the Coast is pivoting away from traditional RPG mechanics in favor of a more narrative-driven, single-class experience. By focusing on a specific character arc and an open-world structure inspired by D&D lore, the company is attempting to modernize how the IP is translated into digital media.

Industry Implications

This move represents a calculated strategic pivot for Wizards of the Coast. By moving into the AAA action-adventure space, the company is attempting to capture a broader audience that typically gravitates toward high-production, combat-heavy titles. Leveraging the massive global recognition of the D&D intellectual property allows the company to compete in a crowded market of dark fantasy games while diversifying its portfolio beyond tabletop gaming and traditional turn-based digital adaptations.

Looking Ahead

'Warlock' is currently slated for release in 2027. The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. While the gameplay trailer provided a glimpse into the combat and world-building, further details regarding the full scope of the open world and the specific mechanics of the pact system remain to be seen as development continues over the next three years.
